Meet the Norns: Creatures of ALBIA Unveiled
The world of ALBIA is filled with floating islands, alien plants, ancient machines and unusual wildlife. However, no creature is more important to its story than the Norn.
Norns are intelligent fantasy beings that can learn, grow, form relationships and pass their traits to future generations. They are not simple pets or background characters. Each Norn is planned to have its own genes, needs, emotions, memories, personality and life experiences.
Currently being developed by GrayWolf.Games, ALBIA will allow players to control, care for and live alongside these creatures while exploring the secrets of their world.

The Origins of ALBIA’s Norns
The true origin of the Norns is closely tied to the lost history of ALBIA.
At the centre of the world stands the Mother Tree, a vast living structure connected to an ancient ship known as the Mother Vessel, or ARK. Hidden rooms, old machines and flooded ruins beneath the tree suggest that the Norns were shaped by beings who understood both life and advanced science.
Their complete origin will form part of the mystery players uncover during the game. The Norns of ALBIA are being designed specifically for this world, with their own appearance, lore, breeds and biological systems.
ALBIA takes inspiration from classic artificial-life and creature simulation games, but its Norns are being developed as a new interpretation built around ALBIA’s own story.
What Does a Norn Look Like?
Norns have a recognisable fantasy appearance that combines cute features with a slim and athletic body.
The main Norn design includes:
A large, rounded head.
Huge and expressive eyes.
Very large ears that point sideways.
A small nose and visible mouth.
Sharp but friendly-looking teeth.
A slim, flexible body.
Long tails.
Digitigrade, animal-like legs.
Hands with three fingers and one thumb.
Feet with four toes.
Fur, hair, markings and many possible body traits.
Norns may stand between roughly three and five-and-a-half feet tall, depending on their age, genes and body type.
Their appearance can also change through their breed, inherited genes and mutations.
Different Types of Norns
ALBIA will use one shared Norn species framework, but Norns can have different roles within the game.
Player Norns
The Player Norn is directly controlled by the player.
It will be able to explore the world, interact with other creatures, use items, discover mutations and unlock new abilities. Unlike most tameable Norns, the Player Norn will not age normally.
Tameable Norns
Tameable Norns are living creatures that players can find, hatch, raise and care for.
Players will be able to:
Feed and provide water for them.
Pet and comfort them.
Carry young Norns.
Teach and guide them.
Keep them clean and safe.
Build trust with them.
Help them form relationships.
Breed them and raise their young.
Treat illness, injuries or harmful mutations.
Tameable Norns will continue to have their own needs and feelings rather than acting only when directly controlled.
NPC Norns
NPC Norns will live within ALBIA’s towns and villages.
They may have homes, jobs, shops, families, friendships and daily routines. Players may be able to speak with them, help them, buy items from them or become part of their personal lives.
The aim is for NPC Norns to feel like members of a living community rather than fixed characters who remain in one place.
Norn Breeds
Norns can belong to different breeds that affect their appearance and inherited traits.
Planned breed styles include:
Default Norn, representing the main natural form.
Tiger Norn, with stripes, specialised ears and paw-like traits.
Giraffe Norn, with tall features, unique markings and possible head growths.
Deer or Elk Norn, with natural patterns, antlers and different tails.
Drago Norn, with scales, horns and dragon-like traits.
Breeds will not only function as skins. Their features may pass into future generations and blend with other bloodlines.
Further breeds may be introduced as ALBIA continues to grow.
Character Customisation
Players will be able to shape the appearance of their Player Norn through the character creator.
Planned options include:
Head and muzzle shape.
Eye colour and pupil shape.
Ear type.
Tail type.
Body shape.
Height and weight.
Hand and foot types.
Fur colour and patterns.
Fur and hair length.
Curly, wavy, straight, neat or messy hairstyles.
Gender, orientation and personality.
Breed and blood type.
This system is designed to let players make personal Norns while keeping every design recognisable as part of the same species.
Genes and Inherited Traits
Genes are one of the most important parts of a Norn’s life.
When two Norns have young, traits from both parents may pass into the egg. Some traits may be clearly visible, while others can remain hidden and appear in a later generation.
Genes may affect:
Fur colour and patterns.
Eye colour.
Head and body shape.
Ears, tails, hands and feet.
Height and weight.
Health.
Personality.
Natural skills.
Reproductive roles.
Rare mutations.
Elemental traits.
This allows players to raise full family lines rather than creating unrelated creatures each time.
A bloodline may slowly become known for a certain appearance, behaviour, strength or rare gene.
Norn Mutations
Some Norns may develop mutations through inherited genes, world events, unusual environments or ancient technology.
Possible mutations include:
Horns.
Wings.
Scales.
Hooves or paws.
Fins and gills.
New tail forms.
Root-like growth.
Glowing markings.
Hard skin.
Extra limbs.
Elemental abilities.
Elemental traits may be linked to fire, water, air, earth, nature, light or darkness.
Not every mutation will be helpful. Some may cause poor health, pain, weakness or unstable traits. Others may unlock rare abilities and allow a Norn to survive in places that would normally be dangerous.
How Norns Learn
Norns are planned to learn through a mix of their genes, needs, memories and experiences.
They will not all react in the same way. A brave Norn may explore something new, while a nervous Norn may hide or return home.
The way a player treats a Norn will also affect its behaviour. Kind care can build trust, while neglect or harm may cause fear, anger or withdrawal.
Players will be able to guide Norns through repeated care and interaction, but each creature will learn at its own pace.
The aim is for teaching to feel like building a bond rather than simply filling an experience bar.
Needs and Daily Care
Every tameable Norn will have a set of needs that must be cared for.
These include:
Health.
Stamina.
Hunger.
Thirst.
Energy.
Social contact.
Fun.
Cleanliness.
Comfort.
Safety.
Ignoring these needs can affect a Norn’s mood, trust and health. A frightened or distressed Norn may attempt to return to its nursery, nest or home.
Different Norns may also respond to care in different ways because of their personality, age and past experiences.
Emotions and Memories
Norns can experience emotions such as joy, fear, grief, anger, love, stress and calm.
Their emotions will be linked to memories of important events.
A Norn may remember:
Being fed.
Being played with.
Being frightened.
Being told off.
Being protected.
Sleeping somewhere safe.
Hatching from its egg.
Seeing another Norn become injured.
Witnessing the death of someone close.
These memories can shape future behaviour.
A Norn that remembers being protected may trust the player more. One that remembers being harmed may avoid that person or react with fear.
This means two Norns with similar genes can still develop into very different individuals.
Friendship, Love and Family
Norns are social creatures that can form many types of bonds.
They may develop:
Friendships.
Close friendships.
Rivalries.
Romantic relationships.
Family bonds.
Trust or fear toward the player.
Bonds with parents, siblings and young.
A Norn’s gender, orientation and reproductive role are separate traits. Some Norns may be able to carry an egg, some may be able to make another Norn carry an egg, some may be capable of both, and others may be unable to reproduce.
These systems allow families to form in many different ways while keeping inherited genes central to each new generation.
The Norn Life Cycle
Norns will grow through several life stages:
Egg → Blabber → Junior → Senior → Ancestor → Death
Each main stage will have its own body form. Smaller changes within a stage may happen slowly as the Norn grows.
A teenage Norn remains part of the Junior stage before changing into a Senior during a birthday event.
Senior Norns can safely form families and breed. Ancestor Norns may still be capable of reproduction in rare cases, but pregnancy at that age can carry serious health risks.
Age will affect more than appearance. It may also influence a Norn’s needs, movement, health, social role and ability to reproduce.
Death and the Mother Tree
Death is a natural but meaningful part of Norn life.
When a Norn dies, those who knew it may experience grief and remember the loss. Ancestor Norns may also take part in rites linked to the Mother Tree.
The body and life of a dead Norn can return to the Mother Tree, connecting death to the wider cycle of ALBIA.
This means a Norn’s life does not simply end and vanish. Its bloodline, memories and place in the world can continue to affect future generations.
Norns and the World Around Them
Norns live alongside alien plants, farm creatures, wild animals and other intelligent species.
They may interact with:
Crops and harvestable plants.
Domestic farm animals.
Natural wildlife such as Rootrunners.
Other Norn families.
Underground Ennits.
Ground-dwelling Shee.
Dangerous predators and parasites.
Wild creatures will act through hunger, fear, instinct and territory. They are not simply enemies placed in the world for combat.
Some threats can also affect Norn health and genetics. The Broodrot Maw, for example, is a parasitic creature beneath Verdant Farm Rise that may spread harmful mutations through spores, root fluid and damaged soil.
Caring for Norns may therefore require players to understand both the creature and the world in which it lives.
Challenges of Raising Norns
Norns will be lovable companions, but caring for them will not always be easy.
Players may face:
Illness or injury.
Fear and stress.
Poor trust.
Aggressive behaviour.
Family conflict.
Harmful mutations.
Difficult pregnancies.
Unsafe environments.
Grief after death.
Hidden genetic weaknesses.
There will not always be one simple solution. Players will need to observe behaviour, meet needs and understand the cause of each problem.
Patience and care will play an important role in raising a healthy Norn.
The Future of ALBIA’s Norns
ALBIA is currently in active development. The official Norn model, age forms, gender shapes, character creator and core life systems are still being created and tested.
Planned future work includes:
More breeds and inherited traits.
Improved behaviour and memory systems.
Expanded relationship and family systems.
New mutations and body parts.
More expressions and animations.
Unique sounds for emotions and reactions.
Further links between genes and the environment.
Details may change as development continues, but the main goal will remain the same: to create Norns that feel alive, individual and worth caring about.
More Than Digital Creatures
The Norns of ALBIA are being designed as more than characters that follow the player.
They will be creatures that grow from eggs, learn from experience, remember how they were treated, form bonds and pass parts of themselves to their young.
A Norn’s body will be shaped by its genes. Its personality will be shaped by both nature and experience. Its future will be shaped by the world—and by the player.
Whether players choose to raise a peaceful family, search for rare mutations, protect a troubled bloodline or simply explore alongside a trusted companion, every Norn should have the chance to tell a different story.
The Norns are at the heart of ALBIA, and their journey is only beginning.
