Behind the Scenes: Development Updates for ALBIA
Creating a living fantasy world takes time. Every creature, path, menu, building and gameplay system must begin as an idea before it can become part of the final game.
ALBIA is currently in active development at GrayWolf.Games. The project is still in its foundation stage, but several important parts are now taking shape. Work is focused on the official Norn model, Verdant Farm Rise, the character creator, user interface and the systems that will make ALBIA’s creatures feel alive.
This development update offers an honest look at what is being worked on, what remains experimental and what will come next.

Building ALBIA From the Ground Up
ALBIA is being developed in Unreal Engine 5 as a single-player fantasy creature and life simulation.
The long-term goal is to create a world where Norns can grow, learn, form relationships, remember past events and pass their genes to future generations. Players will also be able to explore floating islands, care for alien crops, meet unusual wildlife and uncover the history beneath the Mother Tree.
Before those systems can work together, the game needs a strong foundation. Current development is therefore focused on creating reusable models, menus, maps and gameplay structures.
Not everything shown in concept art is already playable. Concept images are used as visual targets that help guide the creation of the real models, environments and interfaces.
Developing the Official Norn Model
One of the most important parts of ALBIA is the official Norn model.
Character artist Erick Daroni has been working on the Norn’s body, face, hands, feet, ears and tail. The aim is to create a design that feels cute and expressive while remaining unique to the world of ALBIA.
The official anatomy includes:
A large, rounded head.
Huge expressive eyes.
Large ears that point sideways.
A small nose and visible mouth.
A slim, athletic body.
Digitigrade legs.
Hands with three fingers and one thumb.
Feet with four toes.
A long tail.
Fur, hair and many possible markings.
Clean topology is especially important because the model must support many body shapes, facial changes, breeds, ages and mutations.
Prototype shape keys have already been explored for different head forms and jaw movement. Further shapes are planned for the body, face and gender options.
Planning the Norn Age System
Ageing is more complex than simply making the adult model smaller.
Norns are planned to move through the following stages:
Egg → Blabber → Junior → Senior → Ancestor → Death
The current plan is to create separate models for the main stages, while using shape keys for smaller changes within each stage.
For example, a teenage Norn will still use the Junior model. It can slowly become taller and more mature through shape keys before a birthday event changes it into the Senior model.
This method should provide clearer age differences without forcing one model to stretch too far beyond its intended shape.
Rigging, weight painting and final animation work will come after the main models and topology have been prepared. Planning for the future skeleton still matters now, even though final rigging is not the current focus.
Creating Gender and Body Variation
Gender variation is planned to use shape keys rather than completely separate character models.
This will allow the same base Norn to support a wide range of bodies while keeping one shared character system.
Planned body options include:
Different heights and weights.
Masculine and feminine body traits.
Several body silhouettes.
Head and muzzle shapes.
Different hands and feet.
Ear and tail types.
Fur and hair length.
Breed-based features.
Pregnancy-related body changes.
Rare mutations.
Many of these options are still in the planning or prototype stage. They must be tested carefully to make sure they work with animation, clothing, fur and future gameplay systems.
Building the Character Creator
The Norn Character Creator is also being designed.
Its purpose is to let players create a personal Player Norn while keeping every result recognisable as part of the same species.
Current interface work includes sections for:
Head and muzzle.
Body shape.
Eyes and pupils.
Ears.
Tail.
Fur.
Hair.
Colour and markings.
Height and weight.
Gender and identity.
Breed and personality.
Buttons, borders, icons, active states and category panels are being created to share the same visual style.
The current screens are prototypes. The next major task will be connecting the interface to the official Norn model so that each button and slider controls the correct shape key, material or modular body part.
Progress on Verdant Farm Rise
Verdant Farm Rise is currently the most developed world area in ALBIA.
It is a large floating farm island and is planned to become the place where much of ALBIA’s food is grown.
Current worldbuilding work includes:
The main island landscape.
Rock and cliff placement.
Stone paths.
Water trenches.
Farm areas.
Crop plots.
Fog boundaries.
Rivers and falls.
Village layout planning.
Areas for homes, storage, shops and a café.
Places for domestic creatures and farm buildings.
The main layout is taking shape, but the area is not yet finished. More foliage, buildings, lighting, materials, wildlife and interactive gameplay must still be added.
A dedicated foliage set is also being planned so that the island can have its own grass, flowers, bushes, trees and crops rather than relying only on generic assets.
Paths, Fences and Modular Assets
Many parts of the landscape are being designed as modular kits.
A modular kit uses smaller pieces that can be reused and joined together. This makes it easier to build large areas without creating every path or fence as one huge model.
Current or planned modular assets include:
Straight and curved stone paths.
Clean path ends.
Water trenches.
Fences and gates.
Farm plot borders.
Building walls and floors.
Doors and windows.
Cellar and basement pieces.
Spline systems are also being explored for paths, fences and parts of the Mother Tree. Splines allow a model to follow curves, making it easier to create smooth routes through the landscape.
The Mother Tree
The Mother Tree will be one of the largest and most important structures in ALBIA.
It stands at the centre of the floating islands and is tied to the life, death and history of the Norns.
The outside of the Mother Tree is planned as a vast background structure within the main ALBIA world. Its roots, trunk and branches will be split into useful parts so that paths and floating islands can connect around it.
The branches are being considered as large travel routes rather than simple decorative branches.
The inside of the Mother Tree will use a separate level containing its rooms, walls, floors and ancient structures. Planned spaces include:
A nursery.
A nesting and hatchery room.
A creation room.
A mutation or modification room.
Study areas.
Old halls and ruins.
Beneath the tree lies the ancient Mother Vessel, or ARK. This mix of living nature and lost technology is central to ALBIA’s visual identity.
Developing the Core Creature Systems
The Norns will require much more than a 3D model.
Behind the scenes, gameplay structures are being planned for:
Needs.
Health and stamina.
Emotions.
Memories.
Trust.
Relationships.
Genetics.
Ageing.
Pregnancy and birth.
Mutations.
Life and death.
Saving and loading.
Player, tameable and NPC Norns will share the same main creature foundation. Each type can then add the features it needs.
For example, a Player Norn requires controls, an inventory and abilities. A tameable Norn requires care, trust, ageing and breeding. An NPC Norn requires conversations, routines, jobs, shops and social behaviour.
The project structure for many of these systems has been planned, but much of the full gameplay logic still needs to be built and tested.
Menu and Interface Development
ALBIA’s interface is being designed alongside its world and creatures.
Current interface work includes:
The main menu.
Start and load-game screens.
The Character Creator.
Graphics settings.
Display settings.
Gameplay settings.
Control settings.
Patch notes and development updates.
Active and inactive button states.
The interface uses dark panels, gold borders, blue light and fantasy details that match the world of ALBIA.
The visual design is progressing, while some button logic and menu switching are still being connected and tested inside Unreal Engine.
Sky, Light and Atmosphere
The world’s sky and lighting are also being planned.
ALBIA will use one main sun, with changing light for dawn, day, dusk and night. Clouds, stars, nebulae, fog and atmospheric light will help each island feel connected to the same vast world.
Floating islands also require special lighting beneath them so their lower rock formations do not disappear into darkness.
The aim is to give each location its own mood while keeping the whole world visually consistent.
The Difference Between Concept Art and Game Assets
Many ALBIA images shown online are concept designs.
Concept art helps answer questions such as:
What should this place feel like?
Where should buildings and paths go?
What colours belong to this island?
How should the Norns look?
What models still need to be created?
These images are not the final in-game models.
After a concept is approved, the idea must still be modelled, given materials, optimised, imported, tested and connected to gameplay. That process can take far longer than creating the first visual idea.
Sharing concept work still provides an important look at the direction ALBIA is taking.
Current Challenges
A project as large as ALBIA brings many challenges.
The development process must balance:
Visual quality.
Game performance.
Development cost.
Clean character topology.
Modular assets.
Animation needs.
Genetics and body variation.
Large explorable environments.
A manageable production scope.
Some systems may need to be simplified or developed in stages. Testing one working age transition, mutation or creature need is more useful than attempting to build every possible variation at once.
This step-by-step approach will help create a more stable foundation.

The main upcoming goals include:
Continue refining the official Norn model.
Prepare the main age and gender forms.
Confirm topology before final rigging.
Import and test the official model in Unreal Engine.
Connect the model to the Character Creator.
Continue building Verdant Farm Rise.
Add the island’s foliage, buildings and farm assets.
Develop the first working Norn needs and interaction systems.
Improve the main menu and settings logic.
Continue planning the Mother Tree and future floating islands.
The long-term early-access plan is intended to include several playable maps, but no public release date has been announced.
ALBIA Is Still Growing
ALBIA is not finished, and there is still a great deal of work ahead. However, its identity is becoming clearer with every model, interface, map and system that is created.
The Norns are taking shape. Verdant Farm Rise is growing. The Character Creator is becoming more defined, and the Mother Tree continues to guide the design of the wider world.
Development will continue one piece at a time.
Every path placed, shape key tested and system planned brings ALBIA one step closer to becoming the living world it is intended to be.
